Exciting news about Alana Cho! 🌟 At 13 years old, this Ridgecrest Intermediate School student and Rancho Palos Verdes resident has achieved an amazing milestone by being selected as one of 10 people nationwide to join the magazine’s distinguished Kid Reporters team. Time.
From a young age, Alana has demonstrated a natural aptitude for writing and has cultivated an interest in current affairs and social issues. Her dream of becoming a reporter has come true much sooner than she could have imagined. This month, Time Magazine tapped her to spend the next year collaborating with the magazine’s editors on writing stories for Time for Kids, an arm of the publication geared toward elementary readers.
“She was so overwhelmed with joy and excitement because she had been waiting for this for a long time,” Alana shared. “I was ready to go as soon as I got home and turned on my computer. I read all the guidelines and made sure my mom signed all the papers.”
Last year, Alana experienced the disappointment of not making it to the final round of the competition to become a children’s reporter. The application process consisted of two parts: in the first, applicants had to write an article on a relevant topic in her community; In the second, they had to record a two-minute video describing why they wanted to be a reporter and write another article about their community.
“While we were waiting for the notification,” Alana shared, “she was really stressed because the last time was so disappointing.”
This year, Alana’s persistence and dedication paid off as she was selected out of 300 applicants from across the country. She will be the only children’s reporter in Southern California, giving her the freedom to explore entertainment-related opportunities.
“As a mother, I was very impressed with her resilience because it was disheartening to be so close to her and not make it,” said her mother, Linda Cho. “I was really proud of her, regardless of what her outcome was.”
Alana draws inspiration primarily from her feminist heroines, such as Oprah Winfrey, Amy Poehler and J.K. Rowling. “I would like to write about some of my role models and I also want to interview Conan O’Brien,” Alana revealed. “I love her world travel series.”
According to Alana’s mother, Time for Kids has more than 4 million subscribers. We can certainly expect to see Alana Cho leave a lasting mark on the world of children’s journalism. Congratulations, Alana! 🎉📰
